Which Chevy Car Keys Need Coding?

Chevy was one of the first car manufacturers to utilize technology in their keys to give their users convenience and security.

In fact, their parent company, GM, had introduced remote technology in their car keys as early as 1986. By 1993, Chevy Corvettes were equipped with proximity keys that could unlock the car as the owner approached.

The FOB and the key wouldn’t be integrated for a few years after that, but it was a huge step in the direction of remote entry and then completely keyless FOBs.

It’s for this reason that Chevy cars and trucks made after the late 80s will need some kind of coding in order to program a new key.

The newer the vehicle, the more advanced the anti-theft technology is, meaning that your auto locksmith will need to be well-versed in your car’s operating system in order to successfully introduce a new key.

What Is Car Key Coding?

Now that we know that Chevy car keys made after the late 80s need coding, what exactly does that process entail?

Well, in earlier versions of these keys, the technology was fairly basic. A transponder chip was installed in the key so that owners could unlock and lock the car without having to put their key in the lock. In the early days, a key still needed to be inserted into the ignition to start the car.

Coding these keys, then, is fairly straightforward. All that an auto locksmith has to do is extract the right code and put it onto a new transponder chip. Then, that new chip can be used to lock and unlock the car.

Later on, rolling codes were introduced which made it more difficult for a car thief to hack into the frequency and copy the code remotely. Unlike the first-generation codes, rolling codes are not a static set of directions but rather a conversation between the key and the car’s central computer.

This way, the car uses an algorithm to update the code and retire old ones. Rolling codes technically can still be hacked, but it takes a sophisticated level of coding knowledge to do it.

So, while this level of technology keeps your car safer, it also means that we have more work to do to introduce a new car key to your car. In order to do so, we need to log in to your car’s central computer and grant the new car key access.

Of course, all car companies, including Chevy, are constantly upgrading their security, which means that we have to keep ourselves up-to-date on the latest tech advancements.

Issues With Your Chevrolet Keys?

Maybe you haven’t actually lost your car keys but are having issues with your existing set.

If your car key has stopped working or works sporadically, it’s possible that you need a new battery or that your car key has sustained water or impact damage.

If you’re not sure how to diagnose the problem with your keys, we’re happy to help.

We’d much rather offer you the simple, and cheap, fix of changing your car key battery than putting you through the process of ordering a new set.

And, if we can salvage your existing transponder chip, we’ll do our best to offer you the least invasive process.

How Long Does It Take To Replace a Chevy Key?

When you call us, the first thing that we’ll do is check to see if we have your Chevy key in stock.

That will save you a few extra days that you don’t have to wait for a blank key to arrive in the mail.

If we don’t have your key, we’ll order you a new one as soon as possible.

Instead of spending your time looking for the right key online—and hoping that you’ve picked the right one!—you can rely on our experience with Chevys to be able to choose the right one quickly.

Once your key is in, we’ll arrange for a time to come to you and program your new key.

The coding process itself usually takes less than an hour, so that you can get back to the road in no time.

Can You Reprogram A Chevy Key On Your Own?

The good thing about the advanced technology in car keys these days is that they’re difficult to copy. That keeps your car safe from theft, even for the most seasoned car thieves.

The downside is that even though you can order a new key online, reprogramming your new set isn’t a DIY job.

Instead, you need access to a specialized device that connects to your car’s central computer.

These devices cost thousands of dollars and are only sold to dealerships and certified locksmiths and mechanics, which prevents just anyone from getting their hands on them.

(In the picture above you can see our technician uses this machine)

Cost Of Replacing A Chevy Key

The biggest question on your mind might be, “What is all of this going to cost?” It will depend, as you might have guessed, on the level of technology in the key.

As we said, cars built before 1986 or so will use mechanical keys only. These are on the cheaper side and easy to duplicate.

You likely won’t pay more than $75 to $125 for the key unless you need it as a rush order.

Now, if your car is from sometime between the 90s and 2010s, you’ll likely have a mechanical key or switchblade key with a FOB.

These will cost more as they need to be reprogrammed to your car. You can expect anywhere from $100 to $300.

Finally, if you have a very new car that uses completely keyless technology, the price could top $300. It’s best to call your certified auto locksmith to get a more accurate quote.

Advanced lock and key came out to my home after my key went missing. They made me a new 2019 Kia optima flip key on the spot and programmed it. The price was cheaper than all the competitors and the dealership. Another company came out and tried to make us a regular key for double the amount. Thank you Josh. Appreciate the good work

Amazing service! Super competitive pricing! This is THE ONLY WAY to get a replacement smartkey for your car.So glad I found them. I had no idea how convenient and professional and affordable a mobile locksmith could be. I needed a 4button key for my 2016 Subaru Forester. I contacted the dealer and the price was over $340. I saw that Ace hardware store could make a replacement 4 button key but it would be a week before the key would be available. I called Advanced Lock and Key and within minutes the dispatcher connected me to the technician, Jim. At 4pm, just as he promised, Jim drove in our driveway and within 15 minutes I had a perfect 4 button key at a reasonable price. Do not hestitate to call Advanced Lock and Key; I'm so glad I did!(Attached is a photo with the new key in the middle and the valet and original key that Jim reprogrammed for us. They all work perfectly! I'm just blown away with how simple Advanced Lock and Key made this process.)Update: Can I give these guys 7 stars? Jim restored proper function to our valet key!! One key we got from the Subaru dealer a couple years ago was a valet key. It never seemed, to us, to work correctly. If we locked the car with the valet key and then unlocked it with the valet key, the alarm went off until we put the valet key started the car with the valet key. It seemed useless. We took the car and the key to the Subaru dealer, showed them the issue and their chief mechanic told us "It's designed to function that way." Please. Jim needed to reprogram all three of our keys, which he did quickly, and now the valet key makes sense: If you lock the car with the valet key and unlock with the valet key no alarm. If you lock the key with the remote, the alarm system is set and if you open the car with the valet key then the alarm sounds. Perfect. BETTER AND MORE COMPETENT THAN THE DEALER!!!Thanks, Jim and thanks Advanced Lock and Key. The best.

Jim was very quick and efficient with getting my problem solved. The dealership was charging me a ridiculous amount for a key replacement. I spoke with Jim and he assured me he could get it done for a reasonable amount and he did just that.
